“Most people assume confidence is an attitude which exudes a strong faith in one’s ability, skill or appearance. But in sports, confidence is far more than simply an attitude; it is a critical piece of performing at full athletic potential.

The definition of confidence is the state of mind that develops as a result of a “”task specific”" repetitive process. For example, pitching a baseball, swinging a golf club, swimming a lap, and so forth are considered repetitive processes in sports. Each of these skills is made up of a series of specific tasks. These repetitive processes instill success by creating competency and skill mastery. The better the skill is mastered, the greater the level of success which leads to higher levels of confidence. For example: A golfer may have confidence in his ability to execute bunker shots, but may not have confidence with putting. If the golfer rarely questions his bunker execution he is said to believe, and therefore “trust” in his ability. However, if the golfer questions, thinks, or worries about putting execution, he is said to be lacking in confidence. To be successful in task execution, regardless of the sport, an athlete needs to trust that he/she has the skill level/ability to execute a task (meet the challenge) to completion.

Trust, then, is the automatic feeling that comes from “”knowing”" that subconsciously the brain has been trained to execute without thought. Without trust in one’s performance, an athlete lacks the ability to consistently perform well because he or she is thinking too much about mechanics, technique or execution. When thinking enters into the picture and takes over what should be automatic execution, the athlete’s confidence level is not where it needs to be for successful execution of the task.

Confidence can further be impacted when an athlete is insecure about his or her ability to perform. He worries about what others may think, and therefore is concerned about embarrassing himself or others because he is not able to live up to previously established high expectations for performance. These expectations could have been set by the athlete or by someone else for the athlete. When fear of embarrassment becomes part of the equation, the athlete will then play tentatively and with limited freedom. Worry creates tension and anxiety which, in turn, cause muscles to be tense and inflexible.

Professional athletes exude high levels of self-trust and confidence. They aren’t discouraged by mistakes, hung up on the comments of others (coaches, parents, teammates), or fear competitors because they trust in their skills and abilities. This strong level of confidence is what separates the good athletes from the “”great”" athletes.

The main attributes of a confident athlete are:

1) Trusts in one’s skills and abilities

2) Believes in oneself as a winner

3) Accepts that mistakes will happen and do not doubt or dwell on them

4) Sets realistic goals designed to foster success

5) Draws confidence from past success

6) Has the ability to “see/visualize/anticipate” success

7) Has a success plan and the ability to execute the plan

Doesn’t rely on the opinions/input of others to determine performance

9) Sees success as a “process” and strives to achieve excellence

All of the above attributes mentioned thus far are necessary components of confidence and a precursor to achieving peak performance in sports. Without them, an athlete may perform inconsistently, perform better at practice than in competition or may let a mistake hinder the outcome.

Many athletes with inconsistent performances often attribute their lack of success to things or elements that are not in their control, like the weather, sporting arena conditions, officiating, pressure from others; or they blame themselves for not practicing enough. These are often symptoms of confidence related issues.

Confidence issues manifest during competition when an athlete gets stuck on a mistake, begins to think about mechanics, or technique, or worries about what others might think about him/her, wants to impress the team/coach/parent, or sets unrealistic goals – sometimes called “expectations.” Any one of these sets the athlete up for an “”all or nothing”" mentality. This type of inflexibility about performance very often produces failure because the previously set expectations are too far out of reach or simply do not match with the athletes skill level.

The first step in resolving a performance issue is to identify the cause of the problem. The following assessment is designed to help you determine whether or not confidence may be impacting your performance.

1) What kind of goals do you set for yourself? Can you achieve them, or are they based on the mindset that if you can’t reach them, you’ve failed?

2) Do you worry about what others think about your performance? Are you concerned about playing to be perfect at your sport (e.g. the perfect swing, the perfect landing, the perfect stroke, etc.)?

3) Do others impact your performance (e.g. crowd hecklers, screaming coaches, demanding parents, shouting teammates)?

4) Do you fear your competition, or do you fear that you aren’t up for the challenge?

5) Do you trust your skills in practice but have trouble applying them in competition? Do you possess the necessary skill level to meet the challenge?

What Is A Preemie?

“Preemie” is the common term used when referring to a premature baby. The dictionary definition of a preemie is “a prematurely born infant”. A preemie is born before 37 weeks gestation while a full term baby is born at 37 weeks or after. Preemies require a very different start in life, and this can vary dramatically depending on the level of prematurity. Micropreemie and preemie are the two terms used to help define the degree of prematurity.

To an NICU medical professional, a micropreemie is defined as a baby that is under 1 ¾ pounds (between 700-800 grams) and is generally born before 26 weeks gestation, but most people prefer to loosen this term up to include any baby under 3 pounds (1500 grams) or under 29 weeks gestation. Micropreemies require a lot of medical attention in order to survive, and many more micropreemies are surviving than ever before in history. The statistics for the survival of a micropreemie can range from 10-80%.

A micropreemie born before 23 weeks gestation has no chance of survival to 10%. Every day inside the mother increases the chances of survival for a micropreemie, and every week is a major significance continuing to push that percentage higher. This also lowers the numbers of short and long term health risks.

Some of the many difficulties that a micropreemie experiences are immature lungs, an underdeveloped digestive system, cerebral hemorrhaging, high risk of infection, incomplete feeding reflexes, severe anemia, neurological delays, physical handicaps, and long term health issues. Because of so many problems associated with being a micropreemie, medical intervention to keep micropreemies alive include biliblankets, blood pressure monitors, cardiac monitors, endotracheal tubes, isolettes, intravenous pumps & tubes, nasal CPAPs, nasal gastric tubes, nasal prongs, oxyhoods, oxygen saturation monitors, phototherapy lights, pulse oximeters, respiratory monitors, synthetic surfactant, temperature probes, UACs, ultrasounds, UVCs, and ventilators. So much more information is being made available to parents of micropreemies than ever before, allowing parents the opportunity to educate themselves on their micropreemie’s needs.

The technical term for preemie is defined as a baby that is under 5 ½ pounds (2500 grams), though the general public chooses to call any baby under 7 pounds (3000 grams) a preemie. This is partially due to the fact that it is difficult to find clothing that fits these babies unless shopping at preemie stores for preemie sizes, so some parents refer to their little baby as a preemie. Another reason is that many people are uninformed about the definition of prematurity.

Statistics for preemie survival is greater than 90%. The medical requirements for preemies tends to be a lot less demanding than those of their micropreemie counterparts. However, it can still be a precarious time and many preemies may still be on much of the medical equipment that micropreemies need. A preemie is weaned off of this equipment as soon as she strong enough or is capable of handling many bodily functions herself, yet, many times a preemie seems to go back and forth for a little while.

As a preemie begins to steadily get stronger and medical needs lessen, it is soon time to go home. Many a preemie has been sent home with medical equipment that their parents have been trained to use in case of an emergency. This is a scary time and an exciting time for parents because they are now in control, not quite sure if they can handle emergencies but desperately wanting to get down to the “normal” part of life, raising their preemie. These resilient, warrior-parents do quite well continuing to fight for their baby and are very in-tune to even the smallest details.

Many preemies continue to have health issues that they struggle with for the rest of their lives. However, as technology advances, some of these problems can be controlled with surgery, medication, and other interventions. This is a preemie!

Description: The German Wirehaired Pointer is a well balanced dog standing 22-26 inches in height and weighing 60-70 lbs. They should have long, thin legs leading up to a well proportioned body. Temperament: The German Wirehaired Pointer is a loyal family companion who is affectionate and intelligent. They should be socialised from a young age or they can become aloof with strangers, they also need an owner who the dog knows is in command. You should never be aggressive or violent towards a dog, however if they think they are in charge they can become dominant. Due to the level of loyalty they have to their family, they can sometimes become jealous of other pets, however because they are such intelligent dogs training them shouldn’t be difficult even if they’re having a stubborn 5 minutes.

Health Issues: Although usually a healthy dog, the German Wirehaired Pointer is prone to a few illnesses and diseases these can include ear infections, hip dysplasia, genetic eye disease, bloat and skin cancer. Their average life expectancy is between 12 and 14 years. Another condition they can suffer from is bladder control disease; this is an exceptionally rare illness that can cause unfortunate accidents. They can also get Lymposarcoma, a cancer of the lymph nodes, and hemangiosarcoma, a cancer of the blood vessels of the spleen, right atrium and the liver.

Grooming: The German Wirehaired Pointer should be brushed 2-3 times a week, to be kept looking their best, and they should also be hand stripped occasionally when it is needed. They are an average shedder and should only be bathed when needed; their coat should have a rough texture so over bathing them could soften their fur. It’s also important to regularly clean their ears, and check their paws for any debris they may have picked up.

Living Conditions: Due to the fact that they are such energetic dogs, they are not suited to apartment life and are defiantly not suited to being kept in a kennel. They would do best with an active family who have a big garden so that they can run around and keep themselves amused.

Stormwater Discharge Regulatory Agencies:

The regulation of stormwater discharge in Florida is administered by two separate but interrelated agencies, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) and the Regional Water Management Districts. The state is divided into five Water Management Districts (WMDs); Northwest FL WMD, Suwannee River WMD, St Johns River WMD, Southwest FL WMD and South FL WMD.

The FDEP & NPDES Permit:

The FDEP administers US EPA’s Generic Permit under the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) regulatory program. The Generic Permit for Stormwater Discharge from Large and Small Construction Activities dated February 2009, specifies the requirements for site disturbance. Compliance with this permit is required:

• For any land disturbance activities of greater than 1 acre for a single project.

• For any land disturbance activities less than 1 acre that are part of an overall development e.g., subdivision, anywhere in the State of Florida.

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection NPDES permit generally contains the requirements designed to prevent the impacts of sediment and/or other pollutants to state waters on or off a construction site. Failure to comply with the requirements of this permit can result in a fine of $2,500 per violation, per day.

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection NPDES permit requires the preparation of a Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP) prior to performing any land disturbing activities. At least two days prior to beginning construction, a Notice of Intent (NOI) must be submitted to the FDEP. The entire Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan is not required to be submitted, but the plan must be kept on site or at an alternate location as specified in the NOI.

THE Water Management District & ERP Permit:

The Water Management Districts are involved in the approval of any construction project that will affect wetlands, alter surface water flows or contribute to water pollution. This essentially covers any construction activity except re-roofings, face-lifts or interior renovations. Prior to beginning construction, an Environmental Resource Permit (ERP) must be obtained. Included in the site engineering design are the requirements for Erosion and Sediment Control (ERSC).

Compliance During Construction:

During construction, the contractor must comply with the requirements of both the NPDES permit and the ERP. Both agencies can and do perform site inspections and assess fines for violations. For all practical purposes, the requirements of the Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan and the ERSC are the same. At the completion of construction, a Notice of Termination (NOT) is submitted to the FDEP and a written Statement of Completion and Certification (SOCC) and Request for Transfer to Operation are submitted to the WMD.

Unfortunately, on sites where construction is partially completed, but has stopped, compliance with these requirements does not end, and compliance by a new owner is often not easy or straightforward. The following paragraph summarizes the complex issues and procedures that would normally be performed on a typical project.

Under Normal Construction Conditions:

During the design of a construction project, a land survey, site and general civil engineering drawings are prepared. These drawings are typically submitted to the local planning or engineering departments having jurisdiction. The site /civil engineering drawings, which contain the ERSC, are also submitted to the appropriate WMD. Upon approval by all departments, a site construction permit and an ERP are obtained. The site survey, and ERSC will become components of a Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan. Both plans require the implementation of Best Management Practices to prevent impacts from erosion and sedimentation either to state waters, wetlands and/or offsite. A NOI is then submitted prior to beginning construction. Should plans change during construction, which affect and change the SWPPP, an amendment to the plan is submitted. Once a construction project has been completed and all landscaping, site improvements etc. are in place and working properly, the NOT is subm!

itted to the FDEP and the SOCC submitted to the WMD. After approval by both agencies, the project is considered complete. This is similar to a building permit where a Certificate of Occupancy is issued by the building department.

Incomplete Construction:

For a site where construction has stopped but is partially complete, the property may or may not be in current compliance with either the ERSC portion of the ERP or the SWPPP. Even if it were in compliance at the time of foreclosure:

• The protective measures in place would only match the current stage of construction when the work stopped.

• The extent and condition of site improvements would most likely not allow for submittal and approval of a NOT or a SOCC.

• Consequently, the project would still be subject to the requirements of both permits, including routine inspections, maintenance of any temporary erosion control structures, etc., and subject to fines by both the WMD and FDEP, if not in compliance.

Since a lender who forecloses on a project under construction must now develop and submit an amended NOI, the “existing conditions” are subject to the following:

• They must reflect the current site status, not the original conditions included in the approved SWPPP.

• Unless the construction will be completed, with all final site improvements, including stormwater, landscaping, etc., the final requirements must be modified in order to obtain a NOT.

• The ERP must be modified and approval of any changes to the permit obtained from the WMD.

• All of this could require a full site evaluation, including but not limited to, a new land survey and new designs.

• Failure to obtain new regulatory approvals would also constitute violations.

How to Comply with the FDEP and NPDES Permit – Incomplete Construction:

Typically, the most expedient and cost effective way for a lender to comply with the NPDES permit requirements would be to prepare and submit an amendment to the original SWPPP.

• The amendment would reflect the current condition of the site and include any improvements that would be implemented to stabilize the site.

• The ultimate goal would be to provide enough improvements to allow for submittal and approval of a NOT and get the site off of the FDEP list.

• This would eliminate the need for regular inspections.

• The degree of improvements could range from absolutely nothing to completion of the work reflected in the original civil construction plans.

How to Comply with the WMDs and ERP Permit – Incomplete Construction:

The same does not hold true for the ERP. Much of the value of a development is in the permit approvals and the lender will not want to lose the value of the asset by closing out the ERP. Typically, the ERP is valid for up to five years from the date the permit is issued by the WMD, however, it still would be important to stabilize the site to prevent any violations but keep the permit open.

The process for an evaluation and stabilization would consist of the following steps:

1. Obtain the original NOI from the FDEP and the Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan from the original Owner/Contractor.

2. Obtain the ERP from the appropriate WMD.

3. Review the plans and perform a site visit.

4. Document the site with regard to any existing permit violations.

5. Document current site conditions and compare with the plans.

6. Determine alternatives for site stabilization.

7. Immediately correct any permit violations.

8. Determine the most cost effective and feasible plan for stabilization.

9. Submit a plan amendment to the Florida Department of Environmental Protection.

10. Upon approval of the amendment stabilize the site.

11. Monitor the site until improvements are installed and fully functional.

12. Submit a NOT to satisfy the NPDES requirements

While some sites may not require all of these steps, and on others it may not be feasible to obtain a NOT, this general procedure will meet the regulatory requirements in a cost effective manner and reduce the liability of a lender who forecloses on a property.

How To Stop Sleeping Too Much

While the more common complaints are from people who are having trouble falling asleep and getting “quality” sleep, some people have the opposite problem.

They sleep too much…

If you’re having trouble getting yourself out of bed on time, and find yourself sleeping much more than you’ve planned too, you’re not alone.

I personally used to sleep up to 14 hours a “night”. Sometimes I’d hit the snooze button for HOURS.

Improving the quality of my sleep was absolutely necessary in order to reduce the amount of sleep I get. After replacing a few bad habits, I now sleep less and feel much more lively and energetic throughout the day, then when I had slept longer.

However, getting rid of some bad sleeping habits, and improving the quality of your sleep is only one part of the process.

As you know, when you wake up you’re not completely in control of your thoughts and your actions. At this stage your subconscious is more dominant.

You may have to admit having some kind of emotional issues, which are suppressed deeply in your subconscious. The simplest way to say it is that you have a lack of motivation to wake up and get up.

Oversleeping can obviously CAUSE problems. The embarrassment when you fail to wake up on time, being late to work or loss of what could be your “free time”, and the tiredness that usually comes after an excessive sleep episode, all of those aren’t going to do you any good.

You should start putting your sleep system back to order, by going to sleep and waking up at the same time every day, no matter when you’ve gone to sleep, no matter what time you go to work, and even if you have a day off.

Practice it for at least 3 weeks (they say it takes 21 days to establish a new habit).

However, if you fail to wake up on time, you should focus on your self-discipline.

You see, most people wake up on time every morning, no matter how much or how well they had slept.

Don’t beat yourself up when you fail. Instead, try to think what went wrong. Try to remember your actions and your thoughts at that morning. Then come up with a plan for tomorrow.

If you can’t even remember what went through your head when the alarm went off, try going to sleep earlier or setting the alarm to a later time. The idea is to get yourself used to be in control of your sleep and wake up habits.

Most importantly, dig inside yourself to find the reason you oversleep. Ask yourself a simple, yet hard question: “What are you running away from”?
